How a University Student Started Businesses that Changed His Life
Hi there! My name is Hosea, AKA The_Laptop_Guy and I am a student of a University in Accra, Ghana. I am an online business creator and coach. Dropped out twice from University because I wanted to be independent, be able to pay my bills and take care leisure and change lives.
As students, we come across financial problems in form of:
- Lack to pay for fees
- Lack to pay for accommodation
- Lack to buy new clothes
- Lack to afford handouts
- Lack to afford getting a laptop or smartphone
Because of these facts, many students are distracted into engaging into illicit monetization methods because they feel they have limited time to get the money they need. Also, many of those who are fortunate to start up legitimate businesses find it hard to sell their products and generate profit.
So, what is the solution?
The solution lies in my story. In June of 2011, I just finished writing WAEC in Nigeria and traveled to England to be with my family who had left a couple of months earlier. It was my first time of being on a plane to travel. When the plane was about to take off I felt as if my ears were going deaf because of the G-Force. The man sitting next to me, noticed how uncomfortable I was and gave me pill. Suddenly, that feeling stopped and I felt relaxed [I hope that man didn't give me cocaine though :) ].
When I arrived at Heathrow Airport, I noticed many things were very different from where I had just left (Nigeria). I took my luggage and met my family waiting for me, I could see the happiness in their faces. First of all, we had not seen in a long time. Secondly, we were in a country many people dreamed of going to.
I got home, ate, admired the environment and thanked God. It was a sure good feeling, I tell you.
After a week, I wanted to start exploring and talking to all the beautiful girls I met and make good friends. But, I needed money to do all of these things. I was asking for money and my parents were giving me for the first two weeks of my arrival. I thought, it was going to be like this all through.
One day, I ask and I hear things like, "we are not in Nigeria o", "things in UK are expensive", and on and on.
What did I do?
Our house had internet access 24 hours of the day. All my dad needed to do was pay the bill when it arose. I went on Google and searched 'how to make money on the internet'. There were many websites and programs that popped up on the first page of Google showing how to make money without a dime and with dimes.
I didn't believe in 'free', so, I chose the program that promised to teach me and give me my own online business website to start making money. I started envisioning what I will do when I made my 4-figure income by the end of 3-4 weeks. I used my dad's credit card to pay for the program, and, that's how it started.
The profit-system gave me access to a website dashboard, which allowed me to design my own website and sell products.
I got into affiliate marketing because that was what I noticed made people a whole lot of money. Also, that was what most gurus I came across said.
I started promoting Amazon products on my store, and sharing links on my Facebook page because that was what I assumed will make me money.
Note: Most of Facebook friends were in Nigeria. Also, they were teenagers who barely had a debit or credit card to do online shopping.
After a week of patience, I was not recording any sale. I was getting frustrated and losing hope. I started thinking I was scammed!
I completely lost trust in the business I had just paid to start.
So, I went back online to look for another way to generate an income stream.
Fortunately, I stumbled upon Freelancing.
What is freelancing?
Freelancing is the process of offering your services for hire for a payment. I had a blog that was getting at least 2000 unique visitors per day. So, I offered to help businesses write reviews about their business and promote it on my blog for $5.
In a week, I was earning an average of $50. I felt good. Now I was paying my bus fares, doing mini shopping's and having a good time.

Finally it was time for me to go to University. I had started going to college, but before I was accepted fully they needed me to write an exam, which I didn't pass.
Then, a friend of mine in Nigeria told me had gotten admission in Ghana. We were child-hood friends who grew up together. So, my dad didn't want me wasting time and gave options of me going to Turkey. As soon as I told my dad my friend had gotten admission, he asked me to try and apply.
I applied and was accepted. So, I had to go to Ghana to school and come back to England during the holidays.
Back to square one...
It was October already, and I got ready, packed up and was ready to start life as a University student.
When I got to Ghana, the weather was so humid and I wasn't feeling good. But, at the sight of my best friend, my mind calmed down. I thought 'if it's good enough for Ibrahim, then it's good for me too'.
Days passed by, months passed and I was beginning to feel the reality of being a university student. My freelance business was not performing as supposed because of lack of time, steady internet connectivity et al.
Customers wanted my service but either I was too late to reply or they canceled their order.
I was back to square one. Also, there were a lot of other bloggers on the platform so customers chose their service over mine. It was annoying and frustrating.
I didn't like to always ask for money. So, I started looking for new ways to make money again for the second time.
I wasn't loving attending lecture being broke, and having to think of what I will eat later.
After two year's of school, I stopped and was doing other things.
Long story short...
I stopped school, and started fishing for business ventures I could start up to make money, pay bills and not ask dad or mom for money.
So, I started an admission agency with my best friend to help students in Nigeria and other countries acquire admission in Universities in Ghana.
Business was good, and I started another University with my transcript a year later.
Ghen! Ghen! Ghen! Ghen!
After Buhari's election as President of the Federation of the Republic of Nigeria in May 2015, our business was not doing well.
Why? Because, dollar rate had inflated. So, people could not longer afford the school fees to pay and we were not getting enough to do proper marketing.
So, our business stopped being profitable. I had to start all over again, and look for new business opportunities to assist me.
I was back to square one twice...
I didn't stop pursuing my happiness. I did research and had sleepless nights because of my search for financial freedom.
My breakthrough!
After sleepless nights of researching, trials and errors. I stumbled upon two ventures that changed my life for good.
- I learned how to create websites with WordPress and offered my services to businesses.
- I learned of the business called 'Information Marketing' which involved me creating and selling eBooks online. All I had to do was identify a problem people faced in a niche market, create an eBook or pay a ghostwriter to write one for me, then sell for a profit.
These two businesses changed my life. I was charging $200 - $1500 to design websites depending on the client. Also, I published some of my eBooks on Amazon and sold others on dedicated websites.
I have made mistakes and also learned from them. I have started different businesses and have lost and profited from. I want to teach you how to create your own profit system with not very much investment.
How Does Making Money Online Work?
Making money on the internet requires you to spot problems, create solutions and sell. Also, if you can not create products yourself, there are outsourcing websites where you can hire freelance ghostwriters to write or create information products for you to sell.

Hi Hosea, thanks for the revelation. But, what if I don't have any skill or certification in Internet Marketing and all that, can people like me make it? Because, I would be pissed to put my money where mouth isn't.
